A dead battery – it’s never a welcome discovery. It can be a major inconvenience and even unsafe at the wrong time. Our trained Mazda service technicians at Cook Mazda have a few tips to help.

Find a New Power Source

The first thing you need to do when you have a dead battery is find a new power source. You need another vehicle or a portable jump starter/battery pack. Make sure that you are close enough to attach your jumper cables.

Get Prepared

Make sure that you have everything ready before you begin. Both vehicles should be turned off. Make sure your jumper cables are easily accessible and untangled. Pop open your hood and secure it with your hood strut.

Attach the Cables

When ready to proceed, you need to carefully attach each jumper cable in the appropriate order.

  • Red clamp → positive terminal of dead battery
  • Red clamp → positive terminal of working battery
  • Black clamp → negative terminal of working battery
  • Black clamp → Unpainted metal surface on the vehicle with the dead battery

Start Your Car

Once everything is securely attached, you want to start the vehicle with the dead battery and then the vehicle with the working battery. Carefully remove the cables in the reverse order you attached them. If possible, leave your vehicle running for at least 15 minutes.
